Step 2 ... Carding

Here is a student carding wool in a workshop. We all loved the hypnotic sound of the motor as it gently purred for several hours of wool carding.

Carding is the process of combing raw, loose wool into a uniform consistency.

My carding machine is motorized, but it used to be hand-cranked. That made life tough. Thank goodness for handyman ingenuity.

This is where we blend background colors. In terms of the "process" of building a work of art, this is a preliminary phase requiring foresight. You look at your reference, in other words, the picture you are working from, and you make blue for your sky and add fluffy white clouds. Then you add the ground and then the foreground.

It takes several hours to complete a small piece, about 20"x20" in the workshop. This is a lot of fun and some of the students are hypnotized by the turning of the wheel. They drizzle wool across the spinning wheel a talk to themselves, giggling, in their own world.
